For Male Threads (External)
To cut threads onto the outside of a pipe, you use a Die.
-
Manual Ratchet Threader: The most common tool for steel/galvanized pipe. You swap out the “Die Head” for the specific size (1/2″ or 3/4″).
-
Split Dies: Used in a “Die Stock” (handle). These are better for repairing damaged threads than cutting brand-new ones on thick pipe.
For Female Threads (Internal)
To cut threads inside a hole or a fitting, you use a Tap.
-
Pipe Taps: Unlike standard bolt taps, pipe taps are tapered. A 1/2″ NPT Tap is used to create the female threads that a 1/2″ pipe will screw into.
-
T-Handle Wrench: This holds the tap and provides the leverage to turn it.
