When looking at DeWalt “36V” tool sets, it’s important to be aware that DeWalt’s primary cordless platforms are their 20V MAX* and FLEXVOLT systems. Here’s a clarification:

• DeWalt FLEXVOLT:
  • DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT system is designed to provide the power of corded tools in a cordless format.  
  • FLEXVOLT batteries can automatically switch voltages when you change tools, powering 20V MAX* tools or 60V MAX* tools. When 2 of these FLEXVOLT batteries are used in certain tools, they produce 120v max.  
  • Therefore, you will find DeWalt tools that operate at 60v max, when a single flexvolt battery is used.
  • It is less common to find tools that are labeled as strictly 36v.
