What a 500A Welder Means
-
Industrial/Heavy-Duty: A 500A machine is designed to run continuously for long periods at high amperage, often using large-diameter electrodes (up to 2$5.0 \text{ mm}$ for Stick/MMA) or thick wires for MIG/MAG welding.3 This is for structural steel, heavy machinery repair, and continuous production work.
-
Input Power: Machines in this class usually require Three-Phase (4$380\text{V}/400\text{V}$) power, as the amperage draw on a standard single-phase outlet (5$220\text{V}$ or 6$110\text{V}$) would be far too high to be practical.7 Some simpler single-phase models are advertised at 500A maximum output, but they may have very low duty cycles at that peak.
-
Inverter Technology: Being an inverter means the machine is much lighter, more energy-efficient, and provides superior arc control compared to older, heavy transformer-based machines.8
