Power and Torque
-
Torque: Look for a maximum torque rating, often around 45 Nm (Newton-meters) or roughly 400 in-lbs (inch-pounds). This is enough power for driving medium-to-large screws and drilling into wood and metal.
-
Speed: Most will have a 2-speed transmission:
-
Low Speed (0-400 to 0-550 RPM): Ideal for high-torque tasks like driving screws and drilling large holes.
-
High Speed (0-1,300 to 0-1,550 RPM): Ideal for fast, general-purpose drilling into wood and drywall.
-
2. Features and Design
-
Chuck Size: Usually comes with a 3/8-inch (10mm) or sometimes a 1/2-inch (13mm) keyless chuck for easy bit changes.
-
Clutch: Includes an adjustable clutch (e.g., 25+1 position) to prevent overdriving screws and stripping screw heads.
-
Motor: Modern 21V drills increasingly feature Brushless Motors, which are more efficient, run cooler, and provide more power and runtime than traditional brushed motors.
-
Battery: Uses Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries, typically rated at 2.0Ah (Amp-hour).
