Different types of cordless drills are built for specific tasks:
- Drill/Driver: The standard drill. It has a high-speed mode for drilling holes and a high-torque mode for driving screws. It has a clutch (a numbered collar) that clicks when a set torque is reached, preventing you from over-driving or stripping screws.
- Impact Driver: A specialized tool for driving screws quickly (not typically used for drilling standard holes). It applies a quick, rotational hammering action (impacts) when it meets resistance, making it much more efficient and less strenuous for driving long or numerous fasteners.
- Hammer Drill (or Percussion Drill): A drill/driver with an added setting that applies a linear pounding motion (like a hammer hitting the back of the drill bit) while rotating. This is essential for drilling into masonry, brick, or concrete. If you plan on drilling into hard materials, you’ll want this feature.
