A cable crimping tool with ferrules is a specialized tool used to terminate stranded electrical wires with ferrules. This process creates a secure, reliable, and durable connection by compressing a metal sleeve (the ferrule) onto the exposed wire strands. This prevents the wire from fraying and improves electrical conductivity when the wire is inserted into a terminal block or connector.

What’s a Ferrule?

A ferrule is a small, hollow metal tube, often with a plastic collar at one end. It’s designed to be crimped onto the end of a stranded wire. The plastic collar helps guide the wire strands into the ferrule and provides a clean transition between the wire’s insulation and the metal sleeve.

How to Use a Cable Crimping Tool with Ferrules

Using the correct crimping tool and ferrule size is crucial for a proper, gas-tight connection. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Select the Right Ferrule: Choose a ferrule that matches the gauge of your wire. Many ferrules are color-coded to correspond with specific wire sizes.
  2. Strip the Wire: Use a wire stripper to remove the insulation from the end of the wire. The stripped length should match the length of the ferrule’s metal tube. Be careful not to nick or cut any of the wire strands.
  3. Insert the Wire: Twist the stripped wire strands gently to bundle them together, then insert them fully into the ferrule. The wire insulation should butt up against the base of the ferrule’s plastic collar.
  4. Position in the Tool: Place the ferrule (with the wire inside) into the correct crimping die on your tool. Most ferrule crimpers have multiple dies for different wire gauges.
  5. Crimp the Ferrule: Squeeze the handles of the crimping tool firmly until the ratcheting mechanism completes the crimp. The tool will deform the ferrule, compressing it tightly around the wire strands.
  6. Inspect the Crimp: After crimping, give the wire a gentle tug to ensure the ferrule is securely attached. The ferrule should be evenly compressed, and no wire strands should be loose or exposed.
