- Taps (usually 17-20 pieces):
- A selection of common metric sizes (e.g., M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8, M10, M12).
- For each size, you’ll often get one or two taps (e.g., a “taper” tap for starting and a “plug” or “bottoming” tap for finishing, or just plug taps).
- Some sets might include a 1/8″ NPT (National Pipe Taper) tap for pipe threading.
- Dies (usually 17-20 pieces):
- Corresponding dies for all the tap sizes included. These are typically round dies.
- Some sets might include a 1/8″ NPT die.
- Wrenches/Holders (3-4 pieces):
- Adjustable Tap Wrench (long handle): For larger taps.
- T-Handle Tap Wrench: For smaller taps, offering better control.
- Die Stock/Holder: For holding the round dies.
- Accessories (1-2 pieces):
- Screw Pitch Gauge: Essential for identifying existing thread pitches.
- Small Screwdriver: For adjusting die stocks or other minor tasks.
- Storage Case: A durable blow-molded plastic case to keep all the pieces organized and protected.
Material Quality:
- Carbon Steel: Many affordable 40-piece sets are made from heat-treated carbon steel. These are perfectly adequate for occasional use, repairing existing threads, or cutting new threads in softer metals like aluminum, brass, or mild steel.
- High-Speed Steel (HSS): Higher quality sets will be made from HSS. These are more expensive but offer significantly better durability, maintain sharpness longer, and can handle tougher materials and more frequent use. Some HSS sets might have a titanium nitride (TiN) coating for even better wear resistance.
