Key Features and Mechanism
- Electro-Pneumatic Mechanism: Unlike a hammer drill, which uses a mechanical clutch to create a relatively weak, high-frequency vibration, a rotary hammer uses a piston and air cylinder to create a powerful, low-frequency impact (a miniature jackhammer effect). This pneumatic action delivers a much stronger blow (measured in Joules or ft-lbs of impact energy).
- SDS Chuck System: Rotary hammers use special drill bits with an SDS-Plus or SDS-Max shank. These shanks lock securely into the chuck but are designed to slide back and forth, allowing the pneumatic hammering mechanism to strike the bit directly and efficiently. Standard drill bits do not work well in a rotary hammer.
